Day 22: Fringe festival. Oh yes it's back.
Vancouver Int'l Fringe Festival you say?
no.
sorry,
the party's on my head.
i've been meaning to cut my fringe since it grew out months ago.
i have this thing with my hair where i have to either get it coloured or cut every 2-3 months or else i'd become quite the wacko.
i've never had a haircut in vancouver ever yet, and i'm quite scared to. to tell you the truth, there are only two people i ever trust to cut my hair - two of my favourite hairstylists in Dubai. i don't even trust myself to cut my own hair,
but
i DID.
finally TRIMMED MY FRINGE in the wee hours of the morn. i just had to. ever since October it'd always been bugging me, screaming relentlessly to get the chop off my head. and now, oh oh oh my forehead feels lighter, much lighter and happy to have something adorning it, blocking its way of glorious shiny-ness.
some of you might've seen me sporting my new blunt look. i'm actually quite proud of it for it's uneven straightness. oh my hair doesn't have to be perfect.
i call it the unique MARYCUT.
ah, and tonight i actually came from a dinner with a great bunch of friends. A friend of ours, lets have him go by the name The TyteLid (i make you sound like a pro wrestler/boxer. hahaha!), was back in town from Ontario for a visit and we couldn't not have dinner with the amazing TyteLid!!!
ate at a vietnamese resto, which i don't really fancy but nevermind that. time spent with friends is more valuable (ack! i'm being slapped continuosly by a big blob of cheese at the moment) but it's true. hanging around with great friends beats anything, even more than the kind of happiness pocky gives you.
doodoodoo - so after dinner our after party was a coffee shop i don't know the name of. per the usual, i try and stray away from coffee because of caffeine highs that may make me burst in energy (nobody wants to see that), and ordered a hot chocolate. and oh, i just realized, i might go on a sugar high instead of a caffeine one. and now i am. here, alone at home, dancing, jumping, headbanging like there's a pool of silverfish on the carpet beneath me.
i had a good night :) got to meet a turtle, got hot chocolate, chilled with good friends and finally got out of the house after two days of hibernating inside the warmth of my apartment.
dear fresh air, you made my day!
this song is one from a fave band i grew up listening to. the word 'bottom' popped in my head tonight while heading home because a friend, CarCar, thoughtfully turned the heater on the passenger seat to warm my bum.

Day 21: Fake Balls
made FAKE MEATBALLS today.
i really think this blog's turning quite into a food blog, eek!
i'm running out of food in the fridge and have resorted to fake meat in a bid to stop the junk going into my system (i've been eating out a lot lately because i'm just lazy to cook). and so the creation of the fakey meatballs.
the ingredients (i usually eyeball everything for cooking):
garlic, onion, ground tofu/veggie meat, beef+chicken stock (oh yes!), soy sauce, whole-wheat breadcrumbs, topped off with curry/tomato sauce i mashed up together with RICE to the side. oh i've been missing rice lately after trying so hard to part from it for a little over a week. the fake meatballs texture wasn't so great, didn't look the least bit appealing at all, but was indeed very tasty as my cooking always is. heehee.
i've been blogging about creating food mostly because i love experimenting with my quirky cooking/baking skills :}D
today, imogen heap popped up in my head consistently. imogen imogen
imogen heap
and her music are
beautiful.
and, i want her latest album 'Ellipse' for Christmas. i hope someone gets it for me *desperate cry*

Day 19: Falalalala lala la lah
today - another insane day in life.
first thing i did was head to Metrotown to meet up with ze girlies of The Broken Place (KokoPops + Sara-O-Bama) and Bella at noon to grab lunch and go Christmas shopping.
Weirdly enough, all my credit cards were rejected. I couldn't have maxed out early in the month already. bummer.
but window shopping was still so enjoyable! also, i went into the Forever 21 store here for the first time ever and oh my goodness their clothes were cheaper than most stores. i could not believe.
moving on, ze girlies were feeling a bit fanceyy having gone on a shopping frenzayy and so we had a romantic dinner at The Broken Place.
I was appointed the domestic housewife and we all went on a cooking frenzayy. Made ze girlies some PASTA while they made guacamole. And the best part of dinner was brie + Misson Hill's Pinot Grigio + apples. mmmyum... and on the side we got guacamole w/ tortilla chips, and sweet chili chips.
and the craziest bit of the night would be the hair colouring. no wait, the insanity started on from hair colouring the gals. again, i was appointed the hairstylist/salon lady so did Bella's + Sara-O-Bama's highlights. the result was what we called 'robby patch-insons'. umm, no explanation needed.
why they got robby patch-insons is because halfway thru i let them do each others' hairs because my back was starting to ache from shopping, cooking + being hyper for way to long, and also because i'm slowly transforming into a grandma (that's why no one can really tell how old i am). and so after the hair colouring, to add to the drama we started buffing + painting the nails - i got midnight blue on mine...
i feel so glam now.
so so so glamourous.
and after all the madness i realized it was too late to take the bus and the next bus was at 5.30AM. and so, another all-nighter sarah-o-bama and i pulled off.
into the early morn i went dancing by myself in The Broken Place's living room with only a strobe light (aka blinking christmas lights). i think the neighbours could see me from 2 sides of walls with huge windows. crazy little lady dancing.
and sara-o-bama rescued me! oh. clearly, i couldn't remember the whole extravagant day/night in chronological order, but it was amazingly r-r-rad!!!

Day 18: The Palette
i've been getting too much sleep lately and now my brain's working more properly. hallelujah!
i'm inspired! how? talked to a friend, two or three (or maybe even four) nights ago about making art, and i remembered i had this book on design from Stockholm, which i had grabbed on my trip this summer to the beautiful vast country of Sweden.
i was looking through the book today and found inspiration from some of the young swedish designers, specifically Jenny Lundgren.
i'm a kid, forced to grow up because of the environment around me and my situation as a student here in Canada. Alas, you shall not stop me art school, people, world! I will create what i call IMAGINARY-LOOKING REAL-BUT-NOT-SO-MUCH FRIENDS. muhahaha.
i love Lundgren's concept - recycling, turning forgotten plastic design objects into something you can pull joy out of. i know it's been done a lot, a recycled sort of concept, but it feels great to build these small wonders. feels just like building with big lego.
and the perfect song to go along with my working condition now is Keane's 'Perfect Symmetry '

Day 17: Hoorah for Doughy goodness!
man o man i think my creative blog's turning into a cooking blog. my love for food is slowly beginning to uncover.
a a and today's special is... EMPANADA!!!
oh how they remind me so much of the Philippines. love love love
i remember how on vacation every year i would go to a mall in the Philippines like Greenbelt 5, Power Plant mall or Shangri-La and always search for empanaditas that they usually sell in SM malls.
oh SM. it's always some of the most overly crowded malls in the Philippines but has the best food in booths spread across the mall. they say that in the Philippines, more so Manila, there is not a minute that goes by where food is not mentioned/seen.
oh Philippines. i really love the Philippines no matter what. I've never stayed there for more than a month - a dream of mine is to live in the Philippines for a year or so one day.
and because of my trying hard to be vegetarian side, i made veggie empanada. the filling i created by mixing in some veggie meat (tofu), beef stock (w/out msg), portobello mushrooms, garlic, onion, spices, bay leaf and brie cheese! the weirdest combination probably to date in the empanada history, but oh it tasted good. the crust i made by myself too and it was perfect. texture was crispy yet soft and the flavour was great because the veggie meat tasted like meat. really.

will be off to a jam sess this evening to hang out with friends. yes, another chance to sing + enjoy live music :)

Day 16: Edgy Eggy topped off with Chocolatey
12 hours of sleep today and I'm feeling so alive.
made EGGS BENEDICT today for lunch. hoorah for buttery + eggy goodness!
i regret eating it now. all that fatatat - real bad for my heart.
and i had dinner with a bunch of friends today. one of our friends on exchange at UBC is leaving soon before Christmas so we kind of had this farewell dinner for him at this quaint little resto by W Broadway and Heather called 'I Cafe'. I wasn't that hungry having eaten my eggs benedict for lunch at 4.30pm and dinner at 8pm. but then we headed over to Blenz and had this EXTREMELY INTENSELY CHOCOLATEY RUSH from a 'hot dark belgian chocolate' drink. IT WAS AMAZINGLY CHOCOLATEY in a good way. i couldn't have tasted anything more chocolatey that that in my life. worth the money too because it filled me up and warmed me from the cold rain out.
and a warm warm song for these nights of cold i recommend is this:

Day 15: Uninspired
made some ENGLISH MUFFIN PIZZA today for lupper, as I'd like to call it (lunch+supper).
it's a really random dish because i as usual threw in all the things i find that taste good from my fridge into a piece of muffin. the ingredients: english muffin, tomato sauce, mushrooms, garlic, onions, chicken sausage and mozzarella cheese. throw 'em all gently into an oven for a couple o minutes and instant yummyness.
i think my pizza had this kind of a mood to it...

Day 14: Coming Clean
i've been getting a bit slow on this blogging phenomenon recently because i've been going out a lot lot lot. and today i haven't really made anything, BUT I've finally CLEANED MY ROOM UP after a month or so! It's clean clean cleaaaaaaaaan. at least from my perspective - no static items stacking on the floor is a good sign for me.. mmmhmhmm.
i've been doing some christmas window shopping today because I've quite spent all my money/allowance already on food so 'I'm gettin nuttin for christmas'

Day 13: O come all ye faithful
Day 13 is a sunday. It's another day of rest for me.
Went to Tenth Ave. Alliance Church today with Andrew + Jessica for their annual Christmas concert which i went to last year as well. I LOVED it again. they never fail to put up a lovely concert. the choir and musicians were almost to a professional. at some points in the concert, i felt chills up my spine because some of the performances that were just too beautiful to explain. makes me wish I had an opera sort of voice. and, guess what - met Teresa, Aaron + Caterine the same day (Amy was the only one from the bunch that day that we had planned on meeting)! funny how God always thinks of re-uniting us ECUADians one way or another. note: i think the reason why we ECUADians hang out in a small group of our own for student dinners is because we hardly see or talk to each other within the week due to our constantly changing and hectic scheds.
so today, unfortunately and unknowingly, we had lunch at a vegetarian resto. not my cup of tea really. I've always needed some kind of meat (poultry or seafood) in my food because i can't stand too much leafy greens! I feel like an animal eating too much leaves. But that's ok. I lived, no harm done to me eating veggie food. went to 'The Foundation' off of Main St. to have lunch together.
I have to say I didn't like the food very much because it was dry, my order at least. I had a 'Foundation Burger' that comprised of a leafy tofu pattie with garlic sauce and tomatoes with an extremely leafylicious salad to the side (topped with this yummy-to-my-tummy mango dressing with sesame seeds). The meal didn't taste that bad, but I didn't like how everything was very very dry. The bread wasn't quite fresh and the tofu pattie had this written on its forehead - "very dry skin". It needed lotion, that poor pattie! although i did also get a few bites of their chilli and it was pretty ok. I think the texture wasn't that good and seemed a bit too dry too, but must've been really filling for Amy + Aaron who'd ordered 'em.
ah. i must be one of the worst food critics on the face of the net.
i'll shatap for today and listen to some merry christmas songs like the '12 days of Christmas '

Day 12: Eaten Identity
1AM and I was making thumbprint cookies. Yes, baking again in the wee hours of the morning because I'm a crazy young lass.
THUMBPRINT COOKIES hmm. this just made me think of how original this creation could be - it has my thumbprint embedded on it.
i'm sleepy. don't know what i'm saying any longer. goodnight.
p.s. a sleepy lullaby: Sigur Ros' 'Hoppipolla '

Day 11: i missed Relient K
i missed the Relient K concert and traded my time for the Christmas party at school today : /
BUT i still had a good time! singstar + food + friends is love.
today, baked some THUMBPRINT COOKIES W/ BLUEBERRY JAM + CHICKEN ADOBO.
my kitchen was crazy today!
we had the lasagna lady (Court Love), spaghetti lady (Ladee Jessia), cookie monsters (Lily + Michelle), dish washers/clean up crew (Amywang + Erica) and I all cooking and doing our own thing in a cramped up little kitchen.
It was intense.
more intense than Iron Chef.
a crazy song, from one of the bands i adore, for a fun crazy night:

Day 10: is a nothing
today was the very last day of class for the year 2009 for me. i had to celebrate by not doing anything because i'm way pooped out of my mind. had an essay + presentation due today and my procrastinating ways got the better of me so i worked my arse off well today.
as for today, i shall make up with my lack of creation today with tomorrow's coming insanity. we're having a christmas party in school arranged by the christian community at school and we'll be cooking + baking the day away.
oh but today i found a very interesting video + site... perceiving reality.
i've always wondered what reality really is. one film instructor, Thomas Riedelsheimer said that reality only happens at some moments. It cannot really be recorded.
i'm definitely making some kind of kick-arse art piece with reality as my concept!
and song of the day is.. ten ten ten... something muse-ical

Day 9: Al Dente
that word had been stuck in my head the whole day.
Oh.
i feel so not bothered to do anything today. i think i slept too much (12 hours) and woke up in a lazy mood.
grabbed a free coffee from the corner store near home, had a 15 min meeting w/ one of my instructors and headed back home to work on an essay for my last class of the year happening tomorrow. i'm so happy this semester is almost over because i can't wait to start all the more exciting courses of next semester!
oh/ugh. i'm quite pooped from all this conceptual thinking. thank goodness the holidays are fast approaching and I can be Mary again!
because of my pooped-ness today, i made this concoction i call the JIGGLY WIGGLY PASSEROLY (a pasta+casserole word). threw in some fettucine pasta, pesto, garlic, onions, italian herbs, cayenne pepper, tofu meat, beef broth, tomatoes, three cheeses, cheddar cheese power and breadcrumbs, and voila!
looking back on yesterday, my class was amazing as usual. i loved everyone's installation/performance. i don't think mine went that well though :( It gave a little bit of a different impression than what i had planned for. and again, after class we all had a swig of beer + martinis at the Granville Island Hotel. what better way to end the last class of the semester?
that class was one of my favourites... FVIM 213 (Intermedia). if you ECUers can take it with Holly Ward + Kevin Schmidt as instructors, take it!!!
today's song comes from Brooke Fraser. yesterday in class, one of my classmates told a story of how he was awakened. He told of a burst of light and an opening, and explained it in a sort of zen way. He said once that he belonged to the Mormon church a reaaally long time ago.
i believe that awakening was God calling him.
this song then came up in my head...
p.s. some shots of previous posts' activities are up :]

Day 8: Early Late Night Morn
tis such an odd time to be doing some cooking/baking, but i am!
CHILLI CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES recipe taken from Chef John's Foodwishes blog/youtube channel.
why, mary, why? because i'm a crazy little lady. and, because i feel wide awake. i don't know why.
oh, wait...
yes
yes i do... i ate a meal from Mickey D's for dinner. All that trans fat + chemicals burning in me now are keeping me awake. They must have some secret coffee-similar-like-carbohydrate-chemical in their food. no, i don't want to know.
it's my first time making these so hope they turn out great because i'm giving them away later at school.
and... i'm doing my laundry too right now. because i can.
song replaying (like a broken record) in my head now is Keane's 'Somewhere only we know'
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: done w/ everything (baking +laundry) in 2hours and both went well. yaay.
p.s. i think the cookies were toooo chocklity fo me. also, i used cranberries instead o blackcurrants, italian roast coffee instead o kahlua, and semi-sweet choklit instead o bittersweet.

Day 7: Installation art
I've been getting a bit too much sleep and food lately. feeling woozy from all this.
will be setting up my last INSTALLATION ART piece later today for my intermedia class. i don't know how it will look like, but i know it's going to take me around 4 hours minimum to set it up in the space. my inspiration for this piece is Damien Hirst. yes, the richest living artist to date.
once i've figured out how i want to set-up, i shall post sketches + the final thing :D
song: Björk's 'Wanderlust'

Day 6: juicy fruit
ahh, sunday! i was planning on not posting anything every sunday because it is my sabbath, but i figured i'll be making food for myself anyways.
lately, i've been eating a lot of not-so-healthy food because i can (oh if mom knew). i think my health is slowly deteriorating, so to get back on my feet i've started JUICING again!
back home in Dubai every morning the family juices fruits+veggies together and i miss that detox diet! i know some people cringe at the mention of fruits and veggies to make a juice, but it's not all bad. the first time i tasted that kind of juice, i swore never to drink again. but then i was forced into drinking it... and, day by day, ever so slightly i started enjoying the taste of the 'healthy' flavours that mashed onto my taste buds.
and the recipe i took out of my 'Juicing Bible' i had bought in the summer from Chapters.
It's just basically a mash-up of beets, apples & celery. carrots makes it taste even better (but i didn't add because i don't have any in stock).
don't you love violins despite their freaky factor? Andrew Bird's music is so mesmerizing.
'Oh So Insistent'

Day 5: The House of Ginger
despite the cold, the weather's so fab when there's no rain.
will be going to student dinner today at the Intern House and we'll be making a GINGERBREAD HOUSE. it was never tradition in Dubai or in the Philippines to make gingerbread houses, so this will be my second ever gingerbread house! the first i made was last year at a school party and man it was a competitive contest i enjoyed so much. my group did a sort of Frank Gehry inspired gingerbread house :]
stay tuned for more news later on my gingerbread creation!
listen: blink 182's 'i won't be home for christmas'

Day 4: Titanic
Today was yet again another loverly day for mee.
went to a formal party with the IVCF bunch.
I'm so tired really.
I went running + walking in heels and i got a booboo :C both feet. DAMN YOU HEELS. i wear you one night only and you managed to cut through my skin. i put make-up all over myself for one night only and it had to smudge all over and ruin my dress :(
nonetheless.. as one of my close high school friend, Lavina, says, "fashion over comfort". hahaha. pshh why do i even bother.
well today's creation of the day deals with my hair. for the very first time, I tried to create VICTORY ROLLS & BETTIE PAGE BANGS on my hair and it turned out pretty good, thanks to Ms. M. Tanner's help ;) watched a lot of youtube videos to get recreate the look. looked ah eesy peesy, but when i actually tried making them.. PAIN. i didn't know rolling hair could be such a hassle.
picked to do victory rolls for hair today because i've always had this fascination with pin-up model, rockabilly and '40s fashion. hair was a big big thing (literally) back then in the '40s, and yeah just wanted to recreate that look with pouffy curly hair.
anyhoo after the formal party, went with some friends to the school's 'media pub night' and wow people were dancing like the usual madness. i wish i had danced. my dress just wasn't the type to techno dance in. boo. but, on the good side.. i got many rad comments on my outfit for the night :) one of my classmates mentioned I looked like someone out of "Titanic"!
i had a good night.
food, friends, fun, a pink paper crown. what more could miss mary ask for?
and ze song i chose for today iz... ten ten ten... Leeland's 'Beautiful Lord'

Day 3: Paint
holy effaroo!
i almost completely forgot to post yesterday. not to worry, haven't been slacking off already... last night i PAINTED MY NAILSO! Inspiration: Dita Von Teese's half moon manicure.
i think i forgot to post because i got carried away watching youtube videos and laughing my head off like a loony person alone. hmm. guess whato, going to a formal partaay tonight with friends so nail painto is the way to go go.
colours: Calvin Klein's Red Ruby and Caronia's Black Velvet.
ack i'm not really happy with the result because of the colours i used. i don't really like the colour palette. i wasn't bothered to buy new nail polish either so ahh this will do.
man, i should be getting some beauty rest in here too to go along with the glam.. ciao.
song of ze day:
AC/DC's 'Thunderstruck '

Day 2: I have a shirt on. It is colourful.
a lovely and tad bit tiring day was this day.
had a morning class, hit the gym for a couple of hours (i'm trying), then had a bible study at the Agro Cafe, eating back all the calories i'd burnt at the gym. it's no wonder why i'm not lean - i love food.
to gain back all my energy for the rest of the day, i took an unknowing 15 min power nap in front of my laptop (while doing an essay) and wow it felt quite refreshing. but then again i awoke in a hungry mood. grrrr.
almost everyday in school, i get the question, "what's that on your shirt?" and my reply, "oh it's just food/paint/dirt". yes, i never fail to have some sort of colourful smudged addition to my clothes... and so today's two handed creation deals with T-SHIRT SURGERY! Inspiration for cutting out peeping tom holes (eh?) in my shirts is Adam Saak's CuToure and Kat von D.
i have not always been a t-shirt person but cutting shirts has brought me great joy, really. the moment i started cutting shirts was the moment i started embracing t-shirts. the joy of cutting shirts probably lends to the fact that i enjoy constructing/deconstructing objects because my hands always scream 'create create!'... and feels good to know that you can also sort of play the role of the Creator with objects instead of the living >_<
it was quite hard cutting the shirt because
a. I had no scissor of my own (borrowed roomie's)
b. the scissor was small
c. the scissor wasn't sharp enough.. aaa!
after a gruelling hour, teh star of the night shone through. Pictures up soon. why - because my camera doesn't work with macs so i have to go to school and transfer them onto memo sticks.
song of the day:
Aerosmith's 'Dude (looks like a lady)'

Day 1: First Day Funk
The start of a new blog!
How refreshing.
To start things off w/ a resilient mood, this blog came about in my search for the artist within me (yes, call me crazy if you must). Lately, I've only been making art for the sake of art, i.e. for art school classes. In doing so, I feel I've completely betrayed the word 'passion'. My passion for art has sort of faded because the institution is controlling us art students to portray what they think is the proper form of art. It is not right. The manifestation of this soon-to-be (i hope) notorious blog has spurt forth from the frothy waters of Wonderland teh bring you the everyday musings and creations of a little lass who's slowly regaining back her passion for art and the hand-made.
That all above made sense or not, fret not. Take this blog as the beginning of a new chapter of a little art kid's life :)
doodoo doo doo doooo...
I awoke this morning to the idea of baking something. I truly DO NOT know much of how to cook or bake but i always do try... and they usually fail, visually speaking.
Today was frickety superb for me!!! I had an early morning class (8.30am) which I was late for as usual (but that didn't really matter today because the instructor was fortunately in a good mood. oh thank goodness.). Performance/installation class it was and I'm always excited for this class. It is just so intriguing. Interactive installations, whackass performances, video+intermedia - who can resist?!
This morning, we had a bunch of performances from half the class for 4 hrs, and man do my classmates intimidate each other big time. During class someone in a bear bodysuit costume kept popping in and out of the classroom. Not your average cute cuddly bear, but a scary angry looking one. He freaked everyone out with his passiveness and the way he stayed in the classroom, stared and listened to us for quite some time. Funny enough, the instructor didn't know how to respond to the situation, so we sort of let him be in the classroom. Little did we know that it was one of our classmates who was absent in class that day. Yes we couldn't figure at first because truthfully, 1/3 of people in the class are always absent/extremely late for some shit or another that's probably related to art. I mean if you have an exhibition opening with your work in it you would obviously go to it than attend class, right? Hmmm I know I would, definitely. So yep, the person in the bear suit revealed his real self to us when he came back into the classroom towards the end of class and explained his performance and we critique.
But, the most odd part of today was having a swig with my two instructors and about half the class at the Granville ISland Hotel after class ended. The instructors treated us to two mega pitchers of swelling beer! I could not believe, but meh I was actually expecting it from my amazingly coolio instructors (the biker chick+paddington bear couple). hahahaha. and guess what, we students found the beer swell so ordered another pitcher and some snackity snacks to go along with it - yam fries, salmon chowder, hot hot buffalo wings. and that is the end of my loverly story of today. happy.
AND the main thing I'm supposed to be blogging about today is my creation!
Came home quite late from the mini drinking party at the hotel and the mini shopping at the grocery store so I had little to no time to cook anything special. So I ended up making EGG TARTS!
As I mentioned before, I am not so good in baking + cooking yet, so my tarts came out granny-like. They were soo wrinkly (probably because of expansion and contraction due to my bursting excitement opening and closing the oven door). I don't regret having made them though because they taste mm mm yummy!

I should be asleep now. I have a gruesome internship presentation for tomorrow. aaaa.
Till then, I shall end in a song by a band i grew up listening to - The Carpenters' 'Please Mr. Postman '
